Soul/Funk

Soul and Funk recommendations from our YouTube channel.

Psychedelic blues funk off the album, Freedom Flight. Originally released on Epic Records in '71, this is the 2015 MOV reissue. If you haven't already have a listen to the Shuggie Otis catalogue; phenomenal musician and composer.

Smooth synth-disco 12" from '83, by Dutch band, Time Bandits. This is the Australian pressing from that year.

Disco Funk from Trinidad & Tobago, first released as a 12" in '82 (good luck finding an original). This one is on the Caribbean Rare Groove (Rare Funky Songs From The Caribbean Sea) compilation from 2021. For those interested, Kalita Records reissued it fairly recently. You can still get copies on their Bandcamp page: https://kalitarecords.bandcamp.com/album/star-child

Originally released on 45 in 1973. This is from the Soul Jazz Records, New Orleans Funk (New Orleans: The Original Sound Of Funk 1960-75), compilation, originally issued in 2000, this is the 2011 repress.

Title track from the Chairmen's final album. By far their funkiest, thanks to the Parliament-Funkadelic backing from Eddie Hazel, Bernie Worrell, Billie Nelson and Tiki Fullwood. This is the 2024, 50th Anniversary reissue on Demon Records.

'70s Ohio soul, lost and rediscovered by the Numero Group (they do the Lord's work, truly). This is the 2019 repress.

Top groove from Dap-Kings saxophonist, Cochemea Gastelum's, debut solo record, All My Relations. Released in 2019 on Daptone Records.

Asian inspired funk from the Netherlands band, Yin Yin. From the 2019 album, The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers.
